What is the chaise longue?

It can be defined with different viarieties, such as dormeuse or “cislonga”, the chaise longue is furniture that makes you squint for its potential in elegance and guaranteed comfort. It is an elongated armchair that allows for relaxation and distraction. The tilting of the head and lifting of the legs in the Le Corbusier chaise longue, the first model to inspire modern, designer versions, is the main feature to allow you to rest with your eyes wide open.

Dormeuse or chaise longue: the differences

Many times the two terms mean the same thing: both the dormeuse and the chaise longue are seats designed for a single person who wants to lie down. Basically what changes is the shape. While the chaise longue has a design characterised by curved lines that run along our body, allowing us to get into a ‘semi-sitting’ position, the dormeuse can be traced back to the classic ‘triclinium‘, which is delimited on one side by an armrest and allows us to lie down in a supine position.

Another difference between a dormeuse and a chaiselongue is that the former is essentially fixed, while the latter can also be swivelling, and above all has adjustable reclining systems.

Furthermore, a dormeuse can also be designed for two persons with the creation of wider models, referred to in English as ‘daybeds‘. The chaise longue is usually a single-seater.

Where to position the chaise longue? The space to make the most of it

A number of factors must be considered before deciding where to place our chaise longue. Here are what they are:

• the space: it is necessary to have a larger space because this type of seat is longer than traditional armchairs; it is not only a question of aesthetics but also of good furniture display;
• the style: classic, design, folding, extravagant shapes to be inserted in the environment in a harmonious manner with other furnishings such as the sofa, if already present;
• the colour and material: the choice of upholstery could be too strong a breaking point, but even in this case the combinations are often created to amaze. Even if one opts for a model as an end in itself, one must evaluate its synergy with the other upholstered furniture. The advice is always to choose a colour similar to the room.
• the relaxation area: aim to create an ad hoc area for relaxing or reading, where the chaise longue can be placed, in a corner of the living room, alongside a side table or floor lamp.
• in pairs: buying two identical ones improves the visual and mental concept as well as pleasing more people.

Chaise longue in the living room: the trendy choice

The first thing to know when introducing the chaise longue into the living room is the space available. Since it is a ‘special’ piece of furniture, it does not need other accessories to enhance it, otherwise its beauty risks being sacrificed.

The size of a chaise longue in length is at least about 160 cm, a rough calculation by experts recommends at least a space of more than one and a half metres.

In addition to space, this reading chair must have something in common, usually the upholstery or design with the sofa if present. Even if one opts for a model as an end in itself, one must assess its synergy with the other upholstered furniture. The advice is always to choose a similar colour.

Generally speaking, there are two possibilities for positioning the chaise longue in the living room. The first suggestion is to dedicate one side of the room to what will then be a lounge area for relaxing and unwinding, close to a source of natural light, such as a window.

Or place it next to or opposite the sofa to create a room with an exceptional piece of furniture. If, on the other hand, you do not have a sofa, buying two ‘long chairs’ in the form of dormeuses and placing them in pairs next to each other divided by a small table allows you to fill the room.

Chaise longue in the bedroom or office

The modern designer chaise longue lends itself well to the living area, but is also perfect when placed in a bedroom or study room. It can accompany a sofa or several sofas, creating a balanced, harmonious corner suitable for relaxing and welcoming friends, relatives and clients.

In a very spacious bedroom, the chaise lounge is unrivalled, because it cannot be placed together with a bedroom armchair, rather it replaces it. Even in this room, the new ‘extended armchair’ can be an excellent solution for building an intimate and reserved relaxation area when the other rooms in the house are already occupied. Preferring this position will certainly add a touch of style and class to the bedroom.

In contrast, in the office we were used to seeing such a seat only in the medical office of psychologists, on which patients were made to sit to relax. The chaise longue in the office creates a relaxation corner separate from the work and conversation area and can be combined with Wi-Fi for listening to music, but also combined with office furniture, bookcases for the reading corner.

Outdoor chaise lounge: modern garden furniture

As a replacement for sun loungers and deckchairs, garden chaise lounges, usually equipped with cushions as they have a metal frame, are preferred by those who need to furnish a chic and worldly ambience.

Thanks to their elongated shape, they are more comfortable than armchairs and deckchairs because they are equipped with soft garden cushions. Furthermore, they are ideal garden chairs for reading, relaxing and sunbathing on hot summer days. Furthermore, chaise longues are trendy in spas and wellness centres.
