The International Salone del Mobile 2023: All the novelties of this year’s edition

All the novelties of the 61st edition of the Salone del Mobile

Salone del Mobile 2023 – the most eagerly awaited fair of the year, an international reference point for the furnishing and design sector, returns with its 61st edition to the Lombard capital. Where its first edition dates back to 1961, and will be hosted by the city until at least 2032. Every year, millions of professionals and industry enthusiasts are attracted to this renowned trade fair that hosts more than a thousand exhibitors and gives shape to different worlds: the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, Workplace3.0, S.Project, Euroluce, the SaloneSatellite.

What’s new at the Salone del Mobile 2023

At last, the Salone del Mobile, the most important international design fair, after the hard period of postponement due to the pandemic, returns as per tradition from 18 to 23 April at Fiera Milano Rho with 1,962 exhibitors, including over 550 young talents under 35 and 27 design schools. Thus, also this year it continues its path of transformation and evolution, characterised by an extremely innovative exhibition format capable of responding to the most urgent challenges of the contemporary design sector. So much so that this year, thanks to a single exhibition level, the Salone del Mobile will be more usable for visitors, buyers and insiders, more attractive for exhibitors and more sustainable for the environment.

Salone del Mobile 2023: the year dedicated to light and lighting

One of the most important novelties of the Salone del Mobile 2023 is Euroluce, the biennial exhibition dedicated to the entire lighting world, which this year will also have a cultural and multidisciplinary style. This will be characterised by a ring-shaped route, a layout designed by Lombardini22, usable in several directions, in which there will be no lack of cultural and experiential spaces, from talks on art and architecture, to site-specific installations and actual workshops. In this way, a better connection between the four pavilions will be guaranteed, with a more fluid visitor route in which exhibitors will have greater visibility. The layout devised by the Lombardini22 studio, not by chance, is inspired by the spatiality of Italian urban centres, presenting itself as “the new city of light, with an irregular ring-shaped route, with a fluid and free form”.

In fact, the traditional reticulated route will be replaced in Euroluce 2023, as anticipated, by a curvilinear circuit in which it will also be possible to find relaxation areas where one can relax when tired, specifically designed to recharge one’s batteries and enjoy the visit of mini-exhibitions, works and installations created by artists and designers on the theme of light. Voices of different artists and curators, brought together in one place to create a multidisciplinary project that from design opens up to dialogue with other worlds of creativity, from architecture to installation, to painting, sculpture and photography.

What the 24th SaloneSatellite hosted within Euroluce will be like

The SaloneSatellite founded in 1998 and now in its 24th edition is the event dedicated to designers under 35. There will be more than 550 guests inside pavilions 13-15 of Euroluce. This year’s theme is aimed at schools and universities and is called “Design Schools – Universities / BUILDING THE (IM)POSSIBLE. Process, Progress, Practice‘. This is because the Show wants to emphasise the indelible contribution that these institutions continue to make to the training of new designers, and to the development of design. Once again, the layout of the exhibition spaces is renewed, with the 27 schools placed in a perimeter ring that embraces the individual designers. There will also be the SaloneSatellite Award, now in its 12th edition

Certification as a sustainable event

In addition to the Fair’s structural innovations with the important work on quality, to put the needs of visitors and exhibitors at the centre, in January 2023 the Salone del Mobile received the ISO20121 certification making it a sustainable event. A true reality that works with constancy and dedication on the theme of sustainability, respecting specific criteria in the different sectors. Moreover, by transparently sharing its path with all stakeholders, including exhibitors and fitters, the organisation of the Salone del Mobile Fair allows everyone to align with the defined guidelines. It is no coincidence that, just like Assoarredo, the Salone del Mobile also has a portal with an archive of the various suppliers and sustainable materials that comply with the established guidelines.

Data collected by the FederlegnoArredo Study Centre

Today, according to data collected by the FederlegnoArredo Study Centre, the wood supply chain, which has its most important showcase in the Furniture Show, is close to 57 billion euro. A record growth over the last two and a half years, which despite the many uncertainties regarding the supply of raw materials, recorded an increase of +12.7% in 2022 compared to 2021.
