Modern Rugs: Home Accessories that Create Atmosphere

The vast majority of us see the living room as the most pleasant domestic environment to live in, whether alone, with our family, or with friends. Therefore, given its centrality in people's lives, the living room should be harmonious and comfortable at first glance. Among the accessories that contribute most to creating a perfect space are modern rugs, for whose choice several factors need to be considered, including dimensions, shape, and the brightness of the room.

In the living room or lounge, the modern rug should aesthetically complement the rest of the decor without stealing the show, trying to create a perfect frame. In short, the living area is the perfect setting to welcome a designer rug, which plays a purely aesthetic role, enhancing the space, while in other areas such as the kitchen or bathroom, functionality must necessarily take precedence.

Types of Modern Rugs

Many modern living room rugs are made using the tufting technique. For this particular technique, a special tool resembling a gun is used, which has a needle. This needle inserts the material that forms the rug onto a cotton base where the rug's pattern is drawn. Once the tufting is complete, the back of the rug is covered with a cotton fabric applied with a layer of latex. We can distinguish rugs into four categories, based on their placement in a particular environment. So, we have:

- Modern Living Room Rugs: Living room rugs can have geometric designs, floral patterns, or damask patterns. The key is to choose a modern rug of the right size for the space, regardless of the style, which can be modern, classic, Persian, or ethnic. In fact, an overly large model could visually shrink the room, but if our living room is large, we can place multiple rugs in the space, creating an original and atmospheric area.

- Modern Kitchen Rugs: This space is focused on functionality, so everything that is placed there must be practical, without completely neglecting the aesthetic component. These rugs usually come with a non-slip backing, preventing splashes and the like from reaching the floor.

- Bathroom Rugs: Similar to kitchen rugs, bathroom rugs must have specific characteristics. Precisely because they are placed in very humid environments where water dominates in various forms, bathroom rugs must be absolutely non-slip. They can be made from synthetic, natural (cotton, etc.), wood (usually bamboo), fiber (coconut, rush, etc.), and microfiber.

- Bedroom Rugs: These modern rugs can have a special design or be more classic, but the important thing is that they are safe to walk on, that they are in harmony with the style of the decor, and of excellent quality.

- Outdoor Rugs: Made from synthetic materials, outdoor rugs can be used under the porch, on the balcony, by the pool, and generally outside the house. In this case, the composition of the outdoor rug makes a difference as it must withstand frequent friction, moisture, and general dirt.

Materials for Modern Rugs

The materials most commonly used for rug making are varied and range from wool mixed with viscose to cotton mixed with polyester or polypropylene. Different fabrics are combined to give the rugs a new glossy/matte effect and a surprising feeling of three-dimensionality. Some rugs are even embellished with sequins to give them a precious appearance. In the market, there are also rugs made of hemp, viscose, and plant-based silks. The traditional production countries are those in the Middle East, such as Egypt, Turkey, and eastern countries like India, Tibet, and, in general, the countries in Central Asia. Wool is one of the preferred materials for rug making because it is soft, warm, fire-resistant, and moisture-resistant. Wool rugs have been handwoven since ancient times in countries like Afghanistan, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Turkey. Silk has also been used for rugs for centuries, especially in countries like Iran, Turkey, China, and India, for particularly valuable pieces.
